Chapter 9 Red Angry Nipples

I WAS HORRIFIED that my new friends at the group knew all about the alleged thrush condition of my nipples. I called Suzanne the moment I got home, despite the fact that Sophie was eager to nurse again and I couldn’t use a pacifier. We had stopped using it several days before believing it may have contributed to the pinch. Sophie was not happy. Only nursing would soothe her to sleep, but this time she would have to wait.

It hadn’t occurred to me that my midwife would go on vacation, but that’s where she was. She wouldn’t be back until the following week. Her receptionist had always been helpful, and without missing a beat she assured me I would be in good hands with the doctor on call. My midwife’s backup was a male OB /GYN. The receptionist took my name and number and told me the doctor would have to call me back. Since I had her on the phone, I made the first available appointment with Suzanne for the following week.

I nursed Sophie to sleep and transferred her to her crib. I was getting good at moving her undisturbed. With her sleeping I was ableto work the phones. My next call was to Sophie’s pediatrician. He wasn’t concerned in the least. He told me thrush was common, and there was no need to bring Sophie into the office. He told me I could use the over-the-counter antifungal gentian violet.

“Dab the inside of her mouth with the gentian violet with a Qtip. Just a little, you only need a little. Keep doing that, and at her next checkup we’ll take a look.” The pediatrician had also recommended dabbing gentian violet on my breasts as well. He was a little curt with me when I suggested I get something a little stronger and assured me again the gentian violet would work. I had never heard of gentian violet. Turns out none of the big chain pharmacies had heard of it either. I couldn’t find anyone local that carried the magic potion. But that was what the pediatrician recommended. Peter and I had some misgivings about our pediatrician being in the city as opposed to Brooklyn. We had both wanted to find someone local who was within running distance. I decided that once I took care of the thrush situation I would look into finding another pediatrician. He was great at the hospital, but I was less thrilled with his phone manners.

In the meantime I made a call to one of my few friends with children. “Guess what?” I took a breath before I revealed my secret, “I think I have thrush.”

“You have thrush!” she exclaimed. “My neighbor has thrush, too. She’s over right now.” She laughed. I guess it was going around. I could hear her friend laugh as well. “I had it, too. You just need to get that ointment. You put it in the baby’s mouth and on your breast and it’ll clear up soon enough.
